Role of ACIDS in Skin Care - AHA/BHA

(Exfoliation, Cleansing)

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) - Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Citric Acid, Malic Acid. Each is derived from bilberry extract, sugar cane extract, sugar maple extract, and citrus extracts that provides mild exfoliation to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and enhance skin texture. Alpha-hydroxy-acids (AHAs) encourage exfoliation and have anti-aging properties. They are a group of plant-and-animal-derived acids used in various skincare products. People use them as exfoliants to remove dead skin cells and treat specific concerns.

AHAs are water-soluble acids that peel off the old skin. Encouraging new skin cells to generate and be seen on the surface of the skin. After using an AHA, the skin is smoother in appearance and to touch. AHAs can help improve hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, fine lines/wrinkles and uneven skin tone. Due to the strength of Alpha hydroxy acids, people who have dry or sensitive skin need to be more careful in their usage. We recommend gradually working up to daily use, but daily use is not always necessary.

Beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) - Salicylic Acid - helps exfoliate skin. Salicylic acid is a “lipid-soluble” ingredient, which means it can effectively penetrate your pores. This makes it especially useful for oily and acne-prone skin (particularly for those with “open comedones,” also known as blackheads) because it helps unclog pores and keep them free of acne-causing debris.

BHAs (Beta hydroxy acid) is the opposite of AHAs! It is an oil-soluble chemical compound found in fresh fruit & vegetables, milk and yoghurt. Primary uses include treating acne and sun damage. BHAs go into the pores and clean out the oil that is clogging them. The skincare ingredients boast antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities, perfect for treating acne-prone skin and blackheads. Similar to AHAs, BHAs make the skin more sensitive to the sun, which can cause serious damage. Remember to constantly use a moisturiser or sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 and higher.

Glycolic acid It’s the most researched AHA with the most proven skin benefits. Glycolic acid work by removing the top layers of dead skin cells. Glycolic acid also seems to help reverse sun damage to the skin.

Acids in skin care
Spivak Medical Aesthetics Logo Full White

People use glycolic acid for acne, aging skin, dark skin patches on the face, and acne scars. It comes from sugarcane. Glycolic acid is better for oily or acne-prone skin. Both Lactic Acid and Glycolic Acid exfoliate the skin. You can consider using a product that contains both lactic and glycolic acid. Lactic acid - SuperstarIt’s the second most researched AHA after glycolic acid. Acts as a gentle exfoliant, meaning it helps remove the top layer of dead skin cells, improving skin texture by softening and smoothing it, and is often used to address concerns like fine lines, dullness, and uneven skin tone; it's considered a mild AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) and can even help hydrate the skin due to its natural moisturizing properties. *** Lactic acid is better for sensitive skin, exfoliates gently and penetrates more slowly than glycolic acid. Citric acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that's used in skincare products to exfoliate, brighten, and improve skin tone. It's also used to adjust the skin's pH.  Benefits: Exfoliation: Removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and improves skin texture  Brightening: Fades dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage  Acne treatment: Unclogs pores and reduces breakouts by removing excess oil, dirt, and debris  Anti-aging: Increases collagen synthesis and improves the quality of elastic fibers  Skin tone: Promotes smoother, brighter, and more even-toned skin  pH balance: Helps maintain the skin's natural pH balance of 4.5–5.5  Malic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that is used in skincare products to exfoliate and brighten skin. It is found in many fruits, including apples, pears, and cherries.  Benefits Exfoliation: Malic acid removes dead skin cells, revealing a smoother, brighter complexion  Hydration: Malic acid can improve the skin's ability to hold moisture  Anti-aging: Malic acid helps promote collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles  Hyperpigmentation: Malic acid can reduce melanin production, which can make skin more even  Acne: Malic acid can help balance oil production and reduce the appearance of breakouts
Kojic acid Kojic acid is made from various types of fungi and it’s also a byproduct when certain foods ferment, such as soy sauce and rice water. It is found in different types of cosmetic products, including powders, cleansers, soaps, and serums. The primary use of kojic acid is to lighten age spots, scars, reduces hyperpigmentation. It is effective in brightening and lightening skin. It inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, reducing melanin production and improving skin tone. Regular use can lead to a more even and radiant complexion. Kojic acid is a skincare ingredient that brightens skin and acts as an antioxidant by neutralizing free radicals that cause aging. Use products containing kojic acid correctly and avoid overexposure to sunlight. It’s available in different formulations for targeted treatment or overall brightening.  Azelaic acid can improve skin texture, tone, and appearance by unclogging pores, reducing inflammation, and killing acne-causing bacteria. It can effectively treat acne, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea, making it an excellent addition to any skincare routine. Azelaic acid is a popular skincare ingredient derived from barley, wheat, and rye grains. Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spot Reduction: Azelaic acid reduces dark spots and hyperpigmentation by limiting melanin production, resulting in a more even skin tone. Rosacea Relief: Azelaic acid can help those with rosacea by reducing redness and calming skin sensitivity through constraining blood vessels and soothing the skin. Gentle Exfoliation: Azelaic acid gently exfoliates, promoting cell turnover for smoother skin. It’s well-tolerated by sensitive skin, making it an excellent choice for those prone to irritation. Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Properties: Azelaic acid is a helpful skin protector that shields against pollution and UV damage. Additionally, it is effective in reducing inflammation and redness. Azelaic acid is a powerful skincare ingredient that can improve acne, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea. Use it for a clearer complexion. Hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid aids in boosting hydration. It is a slippery substance that your body naturally produces. It is especially found in the eyes, joints, and skin. It provides so many benefits to your body, including helping the skin stretch and flex, and reducing skin wrinkles and lines. Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan has a gel-like consistency and is naturally occurring in the body. Half of the body’s reserve for hyaluronic acid is found in the skin. Made up of long chains of carbohydrate molecules, which combine with water to help the skin retain moisture, and this helps keep the skin hydrated. Hyaluronic acid is similar to a sponge as it can attract and retain over a thousand times more than its weight in water.  The compound can also increase the speed of wound healing. As hyaluronic acid is already present in the skin, the concentration increases when used in a skincare routine. The acid also regulates inflammation levels within the body, specifically by signalling damaged areas of the body to build more blood vessels when needed. If hyaluronic acid is applied directly to the wound, studies have shown that it can reduce the size and pain faster than some treatments. The acid also has some antibacterial properties, it decreases the risk of the wound getting infected when applied directly.  Poly-glutamic acid Polyglutamic acid can be used to hydrate skin, help maintain skin barrier. Skincare that contains ceramides helps to replenish the skin barrier. This will help to ensure that you prevent skin dryness and infection. Ferulic acid is a plant-derived antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, improves aging signs, and enhances other antioxidants like vitamin C and E.

Role of Hyaluronic acid (HA) Hydration

Hyaluronic acid (HA) (Sodium Hyaluronate) - Hydration staple.

ALL INGREDIENTS - explained

3-O-ETHYL ASCORBIC ACID - A very stable and promising form of the skincare superstar, Vitamin C. If you do not know why Vitamin C is such a big deal in skin care, you can catch up here. In short, Vitamin C has three proven magic abilities: antioxidant, collagen booster, and skin brightener. The problem, though, is that it's very unstable, turns brown and becomes ineffective in no time (after a few month) and the cosmetics industry is trying to come up with smart derivatives that are stable and have the magic properties of pure Vitamin C. Glycerin  - A natural moisturizer, safe, effective. Protects against irritation, helps to restore healthy skin barrier. It is  a versatile ingredient in skincare with exceptional moisturizing properties. It attracts and retains moisture, It helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance and  strengthen its natural barrier function, making it great for sensitive skin. Effective from as low as 3% with even more benefits for dry skin at higher concentrations up to 20-40%. SODIUM C14-16 OLEFIN SULFONATE -  cleansing agent with high cleaning power and strong foaming properties. Unfortunately, these two properties for a surfactant usually mean that it is harsh on the skin, which is the case here as well.  COCAMIDOPROPYL HYDROXYSULTAINE -A thickening and foam-boasting co-surfactant . It's very mild and gentle, comes from coconut oil and is readily biodegradable.  PROPANEDIOL  is a natural alternative for the often used and often bad-mouthed propylene glycol. It is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture in the skin. Propanediol also has emollient properties, which help to soften and smooth the skin.  It's quite a multi-tasker: can be used to improve skin moisturization, as a solvent, to boost preservative efficacy or to influence the sensory properties of the end formula.  COCO-CAPRYLATE/CAPRATE -hydrates skin by trapping moisture within, discouraging trans epidermal water loss. Unlike traditional emollients, this ingredient is naturally lightweight, allowing for an airy feel on skin. CARTHAMUS TINCTORIUS SEED OIL (Safflower) Comes from the seeds of the yellow flowered safflower plant.  Similar to other plant oils, it's loaded with nourishing and moisturizing fatty acids: it's a high linoleic acid oil (70%) and has only smaller amounts of oleic acid (11%) (this might be great for acne-prone skin). It also contains antioxidant vitamin E (44mg/100g alpha-tocopherol). SODIUM COCOAMPHOACETATE works as a cleansing agent. It has so-called amphoteric structure meaning that its head contains both a positively and a negatively charged part (surfactants are most commonly anionic meaning their head has a negative charge).very mild with great foaming properties. It's popular in baby products.  Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (Organic) - Goodie Sunflower does not need a big intro as you probably use it in the kitchen as cooking oil, or you munch on the seeds as a healthy snack or you adore its big, beautiful yellow flower during the summer - or you do all of these and probably even more. And by even more  we mean putting it all over your face as sunflower oil is one of the most commonly used plant oils in skincare. It’s a real oldie: expressed directly from the seeds, the oil is used not for hundreds but thousands of years. LEUCONOSTOC/RADISH ROOT FERMENT FILTRATE -  It's an alternative, natural preservative that comes from radishes fermented with Leuconostoc kimchii, a lactic acid bacteria that has been used to make traditional Korean dish, kimchi. During the fermentation process, a peptide is secreted from the bacteria that has significant antimicrobial properties.  It is one of the more promising natural preservatives that can be used even alone (recommended at 2-4%), but it's not as effective as more common alternatives, like parabens or phenoxyethanol.  LACTIC ACID-  superstar - It’s the second most researched AHA after glycolic acid It gently lifts off dead skin cells to reveal newer, fresher, smoother skin It also has amazing skin hydrating properties In higher concentration (10% and up) it improves skin firmness, thickness and wrinkles GLYCERYL RICINOLEATE - a natural agent that helps protect the skin from dryness and damage. It acts as an emollient, cleanser, and emulsifier. Not only does it prevent moisture loss, but it also provides a moisturized feel to products. ZEOLITE - It helps to remove all the dirt and dust particles from the skin. It absorbs the oil completely too. Hence it is one of the most effective natural components. MORINGA OLEIFERA SEED OIL - The oil coming from the seeds of the Moringa tree, a big white-flowered tree native to India. It's a yellow oil similar to olive oil. It's rich in nourishing and moisturizing fatty acid, oleic (75%) and also contains behenic acid (up to 8%) that makes moringa very stable and gives the oil a long shelf life.  It blends easily with essential oils and can also help to stabilize scents so it's a popular oil in the perfume industry.   Ethyl Ascorbic Acid or EAC for short is an "etherified derivative of ascorbic acid" that consists of vitamin C and an ethyl group bound to the third carbon position. This makes Vitamin C very stable and soluble in both water and oil. SODIUM HYALURONATE - HA HYDROLYZED SILK - enhances suppleness and a smooth appearance. COCODIMONIUM HYDROXYPROPYL SILK AMINO ACIDS - a conditioning agent derived from silk proteins. It provides excellent moisture binding properties and enhances the natural texture and feel of the skin. Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract - Goodie Green tea is one of the most researched natural ingredients The active parts are called polyphenols, or more precisely catechins (EGCG being the most abundant and most active catechin) There can be huge quality differences between green tea extracts. The good ones contain 50-90% catechins (and often make the product brown and give it a distinctive smell) Green tea is proven to be a great antioxidant, UV protectant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic and antimicrobial Because of these awesome properties green tea is a great choice for anti-aging and also for skin diseases including rosacea, acne and atopic dermatitis TOCOPHEROL - vitamin E, is a skincare ingredient that can help with hydration, protection, and healing LECITHIN - Lecithin is an emollient that softens and soothes the skin when applied topically. Its high fatty acid content forms a skin barrier that effectively seals in moisture while keeping air and other environmental pollutants out. HYDROLYZED JOJOBA  ESTERS - function as skin-softening agents in cosmetics. Research shows these esters play a role in helping skin retain moisture and improving its barrier function. TROPOLONE - an organic compound that can be derived from plants. It does have some antioxidant properties but is of most interest to cosmetic chemists as a preservative. Studies have shown tropolone has antimicrobial abilities, specifically the ability to combat bacterial and fungal growth. CAPRYLYL GLYCOL -  multi-tasking ingredient that gives the skin a nice, soft feel. At the same time, it also boosts the effectiveness of other preservatives, such as the nowadays super commonly used phenoxyethanol.  ETHYLHEXYL GLYCERIN -  used as an alternative to parabens (preservatives) and is used for its skin-conditioning properties [1]. Ethylhexylglycerin has been reported to cause dermatitis and skin irritation XANTHAN GUM - Thickening and Stabilizing LAURYL GLUCOSIDE A 100% vegetable origin, biodegradable, mild cleansing agent that gives moderate to high amount of foam. It's happy to work together with other surfactants (in general, that helps to create milder formulas).  SODIUM GLUCONATE - Acts as a skin conditioning agent: It makes the skin softer and smoother. Sodium gluconate is a sodium salt of gluconic acid. It is often used as a chelating agent and pH adjuster in skincare and haircare products, including face washes. SODIUM COCOYL GLUTAMATE A vegetable based co-surfactant that helps to create mild cleansing formulas.  SODIUM LAURYL GLUCOSE CARBOXYLATE   surfactant/cleansing POLYSORBATE 20 -  helps water and oil to mix together. Also, it can help to increase the solubility of some other ingredients in the formula.  1,2-HEXANEDIOLDIOL - It is a great emollient as well as a humectant, that is, it preserves hydration on the skin while also softening it. DISODIUM EDTA - a synthetic chelating agent commonly used in skincare products. It functions by binding to metal ions, such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, preventing them from reacting with other ingredients in the product.  ***SODIUM HYDROXIDE - Sodium hydroxide is a pH balancer used in a wide range of beauty and skin care items, like cleansers, soaps, makeup, and creams or lotions. In its pure form, sodium hydroxide is extremely harmful, but beauty and skin care products don't contain much sodium hydroxide, so they're safe to use. ***SODIUM BENZOATE - Parabens, Phenoxyethanol and Sodium Benzoate are commonly used and considered safe preservatives for cosmetics per regulated guidelines. It is an antifungal and anti-bacterial agent and effectively prolongs the shelf life of your favorite skincare products. Thus, you can reap the benefits of your products for a longer time. CITRIC ACID -  protective antioxidant, and corrective antiaging effects helping to reverse visible signs of photodamage. Exfoliates. PHENOXYETHANOL - A preservative to prevent mold and bacterial contamination in skincare formulas AQUA (WATER)

INGREDIENTS - explained

Glycerin  - A natural moisturizer, safe, effective. Protects against irritation, helps to restore healthy skin barrier. It is  a versatile ingredient in skincare with exceptional moisturizing properties. It attracts and retains moisture, It helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance and  strengthen its natural barrier function, making it great for sensitive skin. Effective from as low as 3% with even more benefits for dry skin at higher concentrations up to 20-40%. Panthenol - Goodie  AKA: Pro-Vitamin B5, (whose fancy name is pantothenic acid) It moisturises the skin. It’s a humectant meaning that it can help the skin to attract water and then hold onto it. There is also research showing that panthenol can help our skin to produce more lovely lipids that are important for a strong and healthy skin barrier.  Allantoin - Goodie WHAT-IT-DOES: soothing Super common soothing ingredient. It can be found naturally in the roots & leaves of the comfrey plant, but more often than not what's in the cosmetic products is produced synthetically.  It's not only soothing but it' also skin-softening and protecting and can promote wound healing. Propylene Glycol WHAT-IT-DOES: moisturizer/humectant, solvent It's a helper ingredient that improves the freeze-thaw stability of products It's also a solvent, humectant and to some extent a penetration enhancer Other functions of PG include being a humectant (helps skin attract water), being a solvent for other ingredients and being a penetration enhancer. Sodium Lauroamphoacetate WHAT-IT-DOES: surfactant/cleansing A mild amphoteric (contains both a negative and a positive ion in its water-loving head part) surfactant that gives a nice foam and also has the unique ability to reduce irritation from other co-surfactants.  Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate - Goodie  ALSO-CALLED: Form of Vitamin C, SAP | WHAT-IT-DOES: antioxidant, anti-acne. The sodium salt form of skincare superstar, vitamin C. If you do not know what the big fuss about vitamin C is, you are missing out and you have to click here and read all the geeky details about it. Pure vitamin C (aka ascorbic acid, AA) is great and all, but its lack of stability is a big challenge for the cosmetics industry. One solution is to create stable derivatives that can be absorbed into the skin, convert there to AA and do all the magic AA is proven to do (which is being an antioxidant, a collagen booster, and a skin brightener). Sodium Chloride AKA: Salt | WHAT-IT-DOES: viscosity controlling Sodium chloride is the fancy name of salt. Normal, everyday table salt. That salt acts as a fantastic thickener in cleansing formulas created with ionic cleansing agents (aka surfactants) such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate. (typically 1-3%) Disodium EDTA WHAT-IT-DOES: chelating Super common little helper ingredient that helps products to remain nice and stable for a longer time. It does so by neutralizing the metal ions in the formula (that usually get into there from water) that would otherwise cause some not so nice changes. It is typically used in tiny amounts, around 0.1% or less. Sodium Glycolate  WHAT-IT-DOES: buffering It helps prevent discoloration of the formula over time or rancidity of cosmetic oils. It can also be a pH regulator and a humectant. In addition to being a chelating agent, sodium gluconate in skin care can also function as a humectant, meaning it helps skin retain a balanced amount of water. Its typical use level in cosmetics is 0.1-1.0%. ***Phenoxyethanol    WHAT-IT-DOES: preservative It’s pretty much the current IT-preservative. It’s safe and gentle, but even more importantly, it’s not a feared-by-everyone-mostly-without-scientific-reason paraben. It’s not something new: it was introduced around 1950 and today it can be used up to 1% worldwide.  ***Caprylyl Glycol WHAT-IT-DOES: moisturizer/humectant, emollient, deodorant It’s a handy multi-tasking ingredient that gives the skin a nice, soft feel. At the same time, it also boosts the effectiveness of other preservatives, such as the nowadays super commonly used phenoxyethanol.  ***The blend of Caprylyl glycol + Phenoxyethanol is called Optiphen, which not only helps to keep your cosmetics free from nasty things for a long time but also gives a good feel to the finished product. It's a popular duo. Citric Acid WHAT-IT-DOES: buffering So citric acid is an exfoliant, that can - just like other AHAs - gently lift off the dead skin cells of your skin and make it more smooth and fresh.   Pelargonium Graveolens Oil - AKA: Rose Geranium Essential Oil WHAT-IT-DOES: perfuming The fragrant essential oil coming from the whole plant of Rose Geranium. It has a lovely scent with a mix of rose and citrus.  Like most essential oils, it contains antioxidant and antimicrobial components, but the main ones are fragrant constituents (like geraniol and citronellol). Be careful with it, if your skin is sensitive.   Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil - AKA: Roman Chamomile Flower Oil WHAT-IT-DOES: soothing, perfuming The essential oil coming from the second most common type of chamomile, the Roman Chamomile. It also contains the biologically active anti-inflammatory components, bisabolol, and chamazulene, but less than the more commonly used German Chamomile. Occlusives -  moisturizing agent, to trap the moisture it draws into the skin. They create a barrier to prevent water loss from the skin Humectants  - are ingredients that attract and bind water. In skin care, they draw water from the deeper layers of the skin to the outermost layer Emollients - are substances that soften, soothe, and moisturize the skin.
